Liverpool Rejects Xabi Alonso’s Bid for Tyler Morton as Deadline Knocks

Liverpool has reportedly turned down Xabi Alonso’s attempt to secure a deal for Tyler Morton before the Friday transfer deadline. Alonso, who currently manages Bayer Leverkusen, had set his sights on the young midfielder but faced swift rejection from the Reds. According to The Telegraph, the 21-year-old Morton is expected to remain at Anfield, at least until January.

Xabi Alonso’s interest in Morton stems from the player’s successful loan spell at Hull City last season from Liverpool. Morton impressed with three goals and five assists, featuring in 41 matches across all competitions. Despite this, Liverpool seems determined to keep Morton within their ranks, possibly to offer him more opportunities under Jurgen Klopp.

Sky Sports has also weighed in, suggesting that Liverpool is not open to any further offers for Morton. This decision means Alonso will likely have to look elsewhere to strengthen his midfield options. Liverpool’s stance could signal their intent to develop Morton further, possibly integrating him into their first team.

The rejection comes on the heels of an earlier decision by Alonso to decline Liverpool’s managerial offer. Five months ago, Alonso was reportedly on the Reds’ radar to replace Jurgen Klopp. However, the former Liverpool midfielder chose to remain at Bayer Leverkusen, citing his commitment to the project he’s building in Germany.

Alonso explained his decision in an interview with TNT Sports, saying, “There were many reasons. After one year, we’re building a team, we’re building a great spirit here. The season has been great so far, and for sure we want to keep having this thing together.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool continues to make moves in the transfer market. Earlier this week, the club confirmed the signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, with the goalkeeper set to join Anfield next summer. Additionally, the Reds secured Juventus winger Federico Chiesa for a fee of £12.5 million.

Liverpool might still be active in the final hours of the transfer window. Rumors suggest they could offload some fringe players, including Stefan Bajcetic, who has been linked with a loan move to Red Bull Salzburg. Calum Scanlon’s loan to Millwall until the end of the season was already confirmed on Thursday.

As the transfer deadline approaches, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool will make any last-minute changes. However, Tyler Morton’s future appears set for now, with Liverpool rejecting any advances from Alonso and Leverkusen.
