Uganda Police has dismissed reports that they shot Bobi Wine during a confrontation in Bulindo, Kira Municipality. Uganda Police spokesperson, Kituuma Rusoke, stated, “Bobi Wine stumbled while getting into his vehicle and injured his leg, there was no shooting.”
This incident occurred on Tuesday evening after Bobi Wine, leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), initiated a procession in Bulindo Town. Police had advised against the procession, citing security concerns. However, Bobi Wine allegedly ignored their warnings and proceeded to close the road. This led to police intervention to prevent the procession from continuing.
Contrary to the police’s account, Bobi Wine’s team claimed on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the police fired live bullets, teargas canisters, and other projectiles during the incident. “Bobi Wine was shot in the leg,” read their statement, suggesting a targeted attack on his life.
However, Rusoke reiterated that the police did not fire any shots. “The officers on-site have confirmed that Bobi Wine simply stumbled and fell,” Rusoke added, dismissing the NUP’s allegations as unfounded.
Bobi Wine is currently receiving treatment at Nsambya Hospital in Kampala. The situation remains tense, with conflicting narratives emerging from both sides. The NUP continues to assert that the incident was a deliberate attack, while the police maintain that it was an unfortunate accident.
As investigations continue, the public awaits further clarification on what transpired that evening in Bulindo. The conflicting reports have sparked widespread debate and concern among Ugandans, highlighting the deep-seated tensions between the government and opposition forces.
